Tiahrt Supports Ethical Stem Cell Research

U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Goddard) voted against H.R. 3, a bill to expand federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, which is research requiring the destruction of human embryos. Studies have shown that adult stem cell research, which protects human lives, provides treatments for diseases while applying ethical standards.

"I support legislation that promotes science and technology without jeopardizing ethical and moral standards that protect the life of the unborn. I believe science should be used to improve the quality of life, to save lives, to cure fatal diseases and to bring hope to those who are suffering, yet I cannot support any legislation that requires the destruction of human embryos," said Tiahrt.

On January 7, 2007, research was released that shows amniotic fluid stem cells were found to have pluripotent properties and grow as fast as embryonic stem cells. The amniotic fluid cells were acquired without harm to a mother or an unborn child.

"Recent medical developments show that successful alternatives to embryonic stem cell research are available. I support finding and developing new treatments—to all diseases and conditions—that do not destroy human life," Tiahrt said.

To date, there are 72 diseases and injuries that have been successfully treated with adult stem cells, unlike embryonic stem cells which have yet to yield a single successful result in human treatment. President Bush is expected to veto H.R. 3, just as he vetoed an identical bill (H.R. 810) in July 2006.
